Our approach to sustainability

Sustainability at Funky Timber

Timber with character. A future worth protecting.

From giving reclaimed timber a new life to responsibly sourcing new timber and working with logistics partners investing in lower-emission transport, we're always looking for practical ways to improve.

Thoughtful choices, made consistently

Small improvements. Lasting impact.

At Funky Timber, sustainability has always been closely connected to what we do. As a UK family-run business, we believe that making sensible improvements to our materials, processes and supply chain can make a meaningful difference without compromising on quality or service.

01 / Reclamation

Giving Timber a Second Life

A huge part of the Funky Timber story is reclamation. Our reclaimed ranges transform wood that has already served a purpose into beautiful wall cladding, furniture, shelving and interior features.

By cleaning, preparing and reworking existing material, we can give timber another useful life. Natural markings, nail holes, knots, colour variations and signs of previous use aren't imperfections to us — they're part of its history.

Old timber. New purpose. Less waste.

02 / Sourcing

Responsibly Sourced New Timber

Reclaimed timber isn't right for every application, which is why we also offer new kiln-dried timber products.

Where applicable, our new timber ranges include FSC-certified timber, helping support responsible forest management. We believe you should have the choice between reclaimed materials and responsibly sourced new timber based on your project's needs.

FSC certification applies only to qualifying products; please contact us to confirm the certification status of a particular item.

03 / Craftsmanship

Prepared Here in the UK

Many of our products aren't simply bought and resold. Our team prepares them at our St Helens workshop, with processes including sanding, colouring, scorching, oiling, varnishing, profiling and finishing carried out by hand, depending on the product.

Keeping these processes in-house gives us greater control over quality, materials and how we manage waste, while supporting UK jobs and craftsmanship.

04 / Materials

Making More From Our Timber

Preparing timber naturally produces offcuts and variations. We aim to use the material we purchase thoughtfully and continually look for opportunities to minimise unnecessary waste.

Our wide product range gives timber many possible uses, from cladding and furniture to shelving, displays and bespoke projects.

Making the most of the material matters.

05 / Distribution

Smarter Packaging & Distribution

With approximately 250 parcels leaving Funky Timber each week — roughly 13,000 over a year at that rate — delivery is an important part of our environmental footprint. We predominantly use DX Express, with DHL and Freightroute for selected deliveries. The environmental direction of the companies we work with matters to us.

🚚 DX Express

Our primary parcel delivery partner has invested in lower-emission transport, including electric vehicles and alternative-fuel solutions. DX has reported the transition of some Express partner routes to electric vehicles as part of its broader emissions-reduction work.

We're pleased to work with a partner taking steps to reduce its transport footprint.

🌍 DHL

For selected deliveries, we use DHL. DHL Group is investing in electric vehicles, renewable electricity, sustainable fuels and lower-emission transport technologies, and has set a goal of net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050.

Its GoGreen Plus offering supports emissions-reduction measures, although this does not mean every Funky Timber delivery uses that service.

🚛 Freightroute

Some larger palletised consignments travel through Freightroute. The company has described initiatives including electric materials-handling equipment and transport fleet modernisation.

Established pallet networks allow larger consignments to move through shared freight infrastructure.

These are our logistics partners' reported initiatives, not a claim that every Funky Timber shipment is carbon-neutral or zero-emission.

Looking ahead

Our Journey Continues

We're proud of what Funky Timber already represents, but sustainability isn't something a business simply completes. As we grow, we'll keep looking for practical ways to reduce waste, improve our processes, source responsibly and make better choices throughout our supply chain.

Your questions answered

Sustainable Timber FAQs

Is reclaimed timber more sustainable than new timber?

Reclaimed timber reuses existing wood and can reduce demand for newly harvested material. The overall environmental impact also depends on processing, transport and the intended use.

Does Funky Timber sell FSC-certified timber?

Some applicable new timber ranges include FSC-certified material. Certification is product-specific, so please contact us to confirm whether a particular product is covered.

Where is Funky Timber prepared?

Many of our timber products are prepared and finished by our own team at our workshop in St Helens, UK. The preparation process varies by product.

Are Funky Timber deliveries carbon-neutral?

We don't claim that all deliveries are carbon-neutral. We work with logistics partners investing in lower-emission transport and continue to consider ways to improve our distribution footprint.
